backwards by design

There are merits to both traditional lesson planning and backward lesson design, but key differences can create challenges for some teachers and students. Backwards Design is a learning theory for designing sound pedagogical courses by starting with the learning outcomes first, rather than starting with your course activities. Academic standards usually provide the best direction for educational goals. For example, according to the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice, students should be able to understand the concept of ratios by the end of sixth grade. Their proficiency is typically measured through standardized testing.

The 9 best gifts for content creators in 2023

While it can be difficult to grasp at first, backward design encourages educators to be intentional with their lesson planning, since it imbues the class time with a specific purpose. In backward design, educators start by identifying or creating a final assessment, then building their lessons toward that specific end. Traditionally, educators identify course content they need to cover, design their lessons accordingly, then create the final assessment. While the traditional approach may work in some cases, there are some significant flaws and challenges.

Curriculum design, and instructional design

Founded by Joshua Rose and Rafael Kalichstein originally as FORM, now known as Citizen Artist, the multidisciplinary design firm creates “artful designs rooted in consciousness, curiosity, and integrity”. Joshua and Rafael believe that good design makes the world a more beautiful place and aspire to the ideal of using their capacity to create work whose process and product both effect positive change. In other words, by figuring out how you want your students to end up, you’ll be better equipped and prepared to teach them the right things so they achieve those optimal outcomes. Backward design can be useful for professional educators and for anyone who teaches students, both online and in person. Now it’s time to create lessons and activities for your course materials. Since you already know what your tests will be about, this should be relatively easy.

Traditional vs. backward design lesson planning

Let's consider the Common Core sixth-grade content in fractions and decimals. The "Practice Standards" are basically endless formative assessments that lead students to mastery. Secondary teachers tend to think that every thing has to be graded, but non-graded is formative, too. Authentic assessment is achieved when you have considered the perspective of your student and built your assessment after you have created well-thought-out learning outcomes.

Backward design arose in tandem with the concept of learning standards, and it is widely viewed as a practical process for using standards to guide the development of a course, unit, or other learning experience. Like backward designs, learning standards are a way to promote greater consistency and commonality in what gets taught to students from state to state, school to school, grade to grade, and teacher to teacher. Educational theory for designing courses by starting with learning outcomes first, then creating assessments, and course activities. Looking ahead to step two of backward design, you will need to identify evidence that an intended learning outcome has been obtained. If a learning outcome is not measurable, then we will not be able to know whether or not our course successfully achieved its goals. Contrary to a popular assumption, this does not mean that the leaning goal has to be quantitatively measured by some objective instrument (like a multiple-choice test).

Section 1 provides an overview of assessment methods and the leading method of how to build strong assessments. With this detailed set of ILOs, we see exactly how the three general ILOs in the first section will be measured. Relatively immeasurable outcomes (e.g., “Gain an appreciation…”) are analyzed into the homework and exam tasks through which students can show that they have gained such an appreciation. This second set of ILOs also provides much more detail, specificity, and measurability.

The designer works “backwards” from that end goal and intentionally plans and develops supporting instruction and learning experiences around the desired outcomes and evidence[1]. The backward design approach to curriculum planning enables educators to provide goal-centered instruction. With learning objectives centered, students can appreciate the relevance of the instructional content.

If you don’t need these sorts of things on your cruise, then look for an older ship to get a much cheaper cruise. Over the past two decades, ships have seemingly transformed from simply seagoing vessels to floating amusement parks. From huge waterslides to promenades, robot bars, roller coasters, ice rinks, and more, it’s hard to believe what they can put on a new ship these days. That’s why cruise lines have largely eliminated last-minute discounts. As you can see in the chart , the fares for the same cruise can vary dramatically, depending on when you sail. We selected this cruise because it runs weekly, giving us a chance to compare the price of the trip over multiple years and see the trends in the fare.

In addition to the fall months, the offseason period for cruising generally includes parts of January and February, but it varies by region. One line recently said bookings have been so strong that it would be stopping all last-minute discounts indefinitely. This sort of upgrade would typically be a "surprise" that occurs when you check in at the pier, so you can't plan for it in advance. It never hurts to remind the staff how excited you are to be celebrating on the ship and ask if there is any chance for an upgrade.

As you’re searching around for a cruise, you can “heart” the cruises you like, so you can go back later and reconsider them. Additionally, the website doesn’t require you to pay the full cost of your cruise at the time of booking — just a deposit. In most cases, the upgrades are for one category, so your best shot at getting a suite upgrade is to book a minisuite, and your best shot at a minisuite upgrade is to book a balcony cabin.

Paying for your cruise with miles is a great option to have. Unfortunately, United Cruises charges a $24.99 processing fee on every booking. Cruise Critic is a cruise-focused website that features reviews, tips, and advice for a huge community of cruisers. The Cruise Critic forums provide a place to ask questions, give advice, and get help booking your next cruise.

Work with an experienced cruise travel agent

One great thing, though, that this site offers that some of the other cruise-specific booking websites don’t? If you want to find cheap cruises, you don’t have to consistently be on the hunt. Sometimes, these cruise deals just find there way into your email inbox, or they are shared on social media.

cheapest way to book a cruise

That could be either a pro or a con, depending on what you’re looking for. Cruise lines sometimes bundle suite accommodations with air, hotel stays, limousine transfers and other add-ons, which can increase the base price considerably. This will likely save you big bucks, particularly if you can use frequent traveler or credit card points for your flights and pre-cruise hotel stay. Below, we've assembled six of our top tips for finding a bargain on a cruise.

Rule #8: DON’T think booking far ahead will save much

The nice thing about this booking platform is that it allows you to search via a few extra categories (like cruise themes) that you won’t find on the other platforms above. Additionally, CheapCaribbean gives you plenty of incentives to book on the platform, with discounts, credits, and even a loyalty club. While the former is known primarily as a site that offers deals you won’t necessarily find elsewhere and gives you a lot of extra info, cruises.com is known for potentially lucrative deals. The only downside to these deals is that you have to be careful to read the fine print. If not, you could feel like you didn’t get your money’s worth or you could find yourself, unfortunately, scammed. That’s not to say it happens every time, though, so just do your due diligence.

If you’re a member, don’t book without checking out Costco first for your trip. Sure, it’s not necessarily a way to find a cruise for less money, but it is less money that comes out of your pocket for the vacation. Sure you might save a few bucks, but it’s not like one day the price will be 30% less when a new sale hits compared to the day before. Head to Las Vegas and drop a boatload of cash and don’t be surprised if you get a comped room.

We searched through the most prominent websites that are used to book cruises in order to examine their benefits and drawbacks and to make some side-by-side comparisons of their prices. Of course, with the health crisis that’s changed a bit, but cruise lines have largely made it a point to keep pricing steady as the sail date nears. After all, if a cruise always dropped prices right before the trip, then it would train passengers to wait to book for better deals. Like airfare (although not as drastic), cruise fares do fluctuate. There’s always a possibility that you may book a trip and then the price falls.

From vacation rentals to flights, rental cars to cruises, Expedia offers a little bit of it all. The site is easy to use, making it a top pick for those who want a hassle-free cruise-booking experience. The only downside, though, is that the cruise-booking experience is so simple on Expedia that you don’t have the chance to get down into the nitty-gritty of what you want from your cruise when searching.

For our cruise, we found prices varied from a low of $1,194 per person to $1,234 per person. If Orbitz and Expedia look similar to you, it’s not your imagination. As such, you would expect them to have the same prices… and they do. What’s somewhat surprising is that when it comes to the headline price, nearly every site has the same offer. So if a cruise is $569 per person on one site, then usually every other site will have the same price. If you're searching for cruises on a third-party website, you may question the legitimacy of that site.

That’s because some sites can offer perks like onboard credit or even a direct phone number to call to talk to someone with any questions you might have before you cruise. We know that trying to find the best rate can be nerve-wracking. We think the key is to do some research first on the cruises offered and what they are selling for. Once you have a ballpark idea of what they cost, you can have a better idea if you are getting a good deal.

After doing so, you will be able to view the cost of that trip on a number of different websites. • You run the risk of missing out on additional bargains that may be offered by other websites. If you have elite status with a particular cruise line, your first inclination when booking a cruise could be to go directly to the cruise line’s website. This is especially true if you have elite status with more than one cruise line. This presents a number of advantages, including the fact that it is uncomplicated and presents less obstacles in the event that any modifications are required.
